3 Easy One-day Road Trips to France
1. Strasbourg
Driving distance: 2 hours from Kaiserslautern, GermanyParking: We chose Parking Austerlitz, an underground parking just 7 minutes from the Cathedrale.
I went during Christmas time which I believe makes any city 10x better. Nevertheless, as a city being close to the German border is said to have one of the most authentic Christmas Markets. We definitely enjoyed the Christmas lights, the hot chocolate with Bailey's and the 11 markets spread out across the small city centre. I also will show pictures during the day so you see how perfect is at anytime of the day!
Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg - gothic church
Food: We went to a Venezuelan Restaurant called VenezoLatino just 5 minutes walking from the Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg. DELICIOUS!
2. Colmar
Driving Time: 3 hours from Kaiserslautern, GermanyParking: a private parking that was being used for public in exchange for donations
This town is also recognized for it's lovely Christmas Markets but also magical all year long. It's a fairytale village with delightful canals.
Food: We tried crepes and baguettes at the food stalls in the Christmas Markets. There are a total of six different markets scattered around the town.
3. Metz
Driving distance: 1 hour and 30 minutes from Kaiserslautern, Germany
Parking: We used street parking across Porte des Allemands and paid at the meter.
Attractions
- Porte des Allemands - This is a medieval bridge castle and city gate. It is a relic of the medieval fortifications. See picture above.
- Le Temple Neuf - protestant church around a beautiful garden.
- Gare de Metz-Mille - is the main railway station serving the city.
- Metz Cathedral - Roman Catholic cathedral with one of the highest naves in the world.
Food: We had a delicious pizza from L'artisan Pizzaiolo for just 9 euros. But that's not all, we got it from an "automated" machine that's 24 hours and takes just 5 minutes to serve your boxed pizza.
These are just 3 out of innumerous stunning cities France has to offer. Hope this brief guide motivates you to take the initiative and explore a different culture, food, music, and customs.
