Thermal waters in Budapest, Hungary
Mainly, what caught my attention to visit this city was knowing that it has 9 medicinal hot springs locations. Then we learned about its impressive history, tourist spots and the most important thing to us: food with good taste. When we arrived in Budapest I was shocked because everything looks old and abandoned, but once in the center of the city you will feel comfortable. The first thing we did was withdraw cash and $140 was 45,000 Hungarian forint. While the dollar uses ($), the Hungarian forint uses (ft). Interesting, right?
Where to Stay
We stayed in an apartment on Szentkirályi street, booked through the Airbnb app. The apartment is within an apartment complex with an interior patio and controlled access. The apartment complex also looks very ugly on the outside but inside it was spectacular !!!! Then we learned that the reason for so many old buildings is because of strict construction policies and today they see it as a way to preserve the history of the city. We stayed 2 nights and 3 days.
Transportation
We bought a 72-hour train and bus pass that cost us 4,150 ft / $13. To move around the city we took the bus or walked. Note: to return to the airport we had to pay an additional 900ft / $3 because apparently the pass we had did not cover that bus. We never understood why but we paid because somehow we had to get to the airport.
Food
- Street food - We went to a food truck complex where we tried langos and goulash. Langos is basically a fried bread cut into a disk shape. As toppings they add sour cream, different cheeses and nowadays different meats too. On the other hand, goulash is a soup similar to the Puerto Rican sancocho but does not include viandas. That is, it contains meat, potatoes, carrots, peppers and onion. Delicious!
- Café Frei - We tried coffee from different countries. 700ft / $2.40 a coffee.
- Kemenes - We tried the famous esterházy torta, or cake with walnuts, chocolate and cream.
- Spar - Supermarket where we made a small purchase to have breakfast and snacks in the apartment. 2,350ft / $8.
- Meatology - We had burgers with fries and drinks for two people. 9,450ft / $32.
- Fortunately, Christmas Markets were already open at the end of November and we had a chance to try Chicken Paprika. NOTE: Hungarians are famous for adding paprika to everything. 6,000ft or $ 20.
- Moncheri Café - Here we tried Stracciatella, or as we know it: Hershey pie. We also had Mochaccino. 1,460ft / $5.
- The Sweet - A spectacularly decorated shop where we tried 2 delicious slices of cheesecakes for 2,180 / $7.50.
- Gelarto Rosa - They are known for serving ice cream in the shape of roses. How romantic!
Tourist Attractions
- Buda Castle- Without knowing it, we arrived just in time for the change of guard. So impressing! We also saw horse guards in the castle courtyard. They open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am-4:00pm for a cost of 3,500ft / $12.
- Cable car - It takes you to the castle at the top of the mountain. 1,400ft / $5 per person.
- Szechenyi Thermal Bath - It is one of the most famous medicinal hot spring locations in the city. It has 15 indoor and 3 outdoor pools. For security purposes, it is not allowed to take photos inside the facilities but if you search online you will see how spectacular it is. 6,000ft / $20 per person.
- Great Market Hall - The largest and oldest market and flea market in the city center.
- Gellért Hill - 235 meters or 771 feet mountain overlooking what was previously divided as Buda and Pest.
- Memento Park - Open museum dedicated to the communist period of Hungary.
- Shoes on the Danube Bank - shoes on the riverside in memory and honor of the Jews who were massacred during World War II.
