One Day Road Trip to Brussels, Belgium
Brussels is the capital of Belgium known for its Gothic cathedral, shopping, and art centers. In general, this country is famous for its chocolates, waffles, and beer. We drove from Germany and made the most of the day in the city. On our way back, we stayed in a B&B hotel to recharge for more adventures in another city in Europe the following day.
Places of interest
- Brussels Grand Place - the central square of Brussels recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. In it is the mayor's office which has gold details with Gothic, Baroque, and Louis XIV styles of architecture.
- St Michael and St Gudula Cathedral - it was built in the 9th century making it one of the oldest monuments in Brussels.
- Mannekin Pis - this is the famous statue of a boy peeing. It has been stolen on several occasions and therefore only a replica is shown. The monument is now Belgium's humorous mascot. The child's clothes are changed according to the festivities and activities throughout the year.
- Galeries Royales Saint Hubert - a high-class shopping center with crystal shops, mostly famous designers, and some even designing clothes for the Royal Family of Belgium.
- Atomium - 334-foot (102-meter) structure comprised of exhibits on Belgian history, science, and art. You get to the top and enjoy panoramic views or dinner in the restaurant.
- Mini Europe - Park with a replica of the most famous monuments of Europe in mini size. Admission is 17 euros per adult. You can also buy the combined ticket to enter the Atomium for 29 euros per adult.
Food
- Waffles - You can't leave Belgium without eating waffles! Some places to choose are Waffle Factory, Maison Dandoy and Aux Gaufres de Bruxelles.
- Chocolate - Wherever you stop in Brussels, you will see a chocolate shop. Try everything and choose your favorite. Some of the famous places are Choco-Story Brussels and Comé Port Royal Brussels.
- Beers - Some of the most famous bars are A La Mort Subite, Delirium Café, and Brew Dog Brussels. You have to try the CHERRY flavored beer! If you don't know which beers to choose from, ask for a "sampler" or "beer flight" of the best-selling beers recommended by bartenders.
