Kaua'i is one of the 6 main islands of the Hawai'i archipelago. It is known as the "Garden isle" for its verdant and lush landscapes. Here are some interesting facts you should know about Kaua'i before visiting for the first time:
- Kaua'i is the oldest Hawaiian island - 5.1 million years in age.
- The largest coffee plantation in the U.S. is found in Kaua'i.
- There are ZERO skyscrapers or housing towers in Kaua'i.
- Kauai is the wettest place on Earth - average of 450 inches of rain yearly.
We spent a weekend in Kaua'i and we are so ready to go back. So here is our 3 day itinerary for you:
Day 1
Arrived at the Lihue Airport at 10am and picked up our rental car from Turo.
1. Breakfast - acaí bowl from Eat Healthy Kauai - Russell's
PS. another breakfast recommendation is Kountry Kitchen
2. Drove north to Queen's Bath which was closed due to hazardous ocean conditions.
3. Hanalei Pier - family friendly beach with restrooms, picnic tables, lifeguards and a beautiful scenic location.
4. Lunch - Delicious kalua pork quesadilla and salmon with vegetables at Kalypso Island Bar & Grill.
5. Hanalei Valley Overlook - Stunning panoramic view of taro fields, mountains and Hanalei River.
6. Kilauea Lighthouse - Located at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10am - 4pm. They recommend to make a reservation online to ensure admission and limited parking availability. Admission fee is $10 for the general public and FREE for military.
7. Check in at Barking Sands Beach Cottages - must have military ID to access and stay at the premises. Reservations are made via telephone and I recommend to book at least 6 months in advance because they get booked fast.
8. Dinner at Chicken in a Barrel BBQ located in Waimea Plantation Cottages - Great atmosphere with variety of food selection, music, order thru the app (no servers), and beer wall.
Day 2
1. Breakfast at Gina's Anykine Grinds Café
2. Waimea Canyon State Park - Drive about 20 mins uphill to experience 5 beautiful lookouts and a breathtaking waterfall. Parking is $10 per car which is good for all 5 parking lots in the park. There is also an entrance fee of $5 per person.
3. Lunch options: Island Taco or G's Juice Bar
4. Na Pali Pirates raft boat tour - check in at 12:30pm, tour from 1pm - 5:30pm. It was an incredible experience. The Na Pali coast is stunning! The crew was fun and adventurous. We were able to see dolphins, sea caves, waterfalls, and more. We had multiples stops to swim, snorkel and snack. I dare to say a trip to Kaua'i isn't complete without a Na Pali coast boat tour.
5. Dinner options: Bubba Burgers or Kalapaki Joe's
Day 3
1. Breakfast at Kauai Coffee Company - grab a coffee, enjoy the view, get a souvenir and take the free walking tour through the largest coffee farm in the U.S.
2. Poipu Beach - one of the best beaches on island great for snorkeling, swimming, surfing and picnic. Enjoy the sunset and turtles relaxing at the beach from afar.
3. Makauwahi Cave Reserve - short hike to an archeological site with a stunning cave and habitat of endangered turtles.
4. Lunch at Kauai Sushi Station - the best sushi I have tried in all of the Hawaiian Islands so far!
5. Ninini Point Lighthouse - Beautiful view just behind the Lihue airport.
Quick car wash, return car rental and flight back home at 4:15pm.
